Fondant Creations

After sickness, schedule conflicts, snow, vacation and the holidays I finally finished my 2nd course in cake decorating. When I started these classes in November at Michaels in Park City I was learning about decoration and form. But last night was the final class and I learned how to lay fondant on my cake. There is a very clean look to fondant cakes that I'm drawn to. I love the simple and smooth look to them. And last night I finally got to make my own cake and decorate it with fondant. Laying fondant wasn't as hard as I thought it was going to be. The technique surprised me and has opened up a whole new world of cake decorating possibilities for me. While the fondant isn't the best tasting, I have an awesome recipe to make marshmallow fondant that I'm hoping will change that.

Laying the cake was the easy part. After that there were so many options to decorate it with. I decided on a pearl boarder and fern leaves as the top decoration. I wanted an elegant and simple look and I believe I was able to pull it off. The mint color was fun and I thought that the white really made the details pop. Next time I might try and do a cake that is a little more fun with more color.

I can't wait to keep using exploring with fondant, the look and quality supersedes anything else I have done. The seams are a little rough, which I expected for my first try. Other than that I am extremely happy with how this cake turned out. Now I just need to start practicing!

Lucky for me, there are a few birthdays coming up, sorry family! Stay tuned to see how my progress is going in the world of fondant. Since I'm hooked I think I'm going to take the third class which is more flowers and decorating accessories for my lovely cakes.
